What makes Topsy so mean?

This is Topsy - more confused than mean - she's old, 18, and doesn't mix with other cats anymore. She takes the empty seat at the table for dinner, has her own cushion on the couch in front of the tv, is more effective as an early morning alarm than any alarm clock.   

Her favourite new trick, given that she thinks she's human, is to bypass the litter tray and use the shower tray instead. I'm sure if she could read a newspaper she'd take one with her whenever she was "seeing a friend off to the coast".
