What makes Tarbaby so mean?

Tarbaby is now 13-1/2 years old and healthy, though this picture was taken when he was 4. Unlike other kitties, Tarbaby has no "play" mode. He goes from cute and cuddly to teeth and claws without much warning. 

He spends about half his time outside, and when other kitties come to play, he becomes so defensive that he will attack any human leg! Ouch! Fortunately, that attitude is balanced by Tarbaby's determined desire to sleep about 20 hours a day.
