What makes Smooch so mean?

We found Smooch abandoned when he was about 4 weeks old, much too young to have been weaned yet, starved and near death, and he's been with us for 8 years so far.

The latest story could term him a mean cat, but it was probably an accident.  One of his claws hooked into our little pooch Wheezy's eye and we had to have her eye removed.  Luckily, Wheezy didn't seem to go through an adjustment period of getting used to having one eye. She and Smooch are as happy together as they ever were.
