What makes Romeo so mean?

By his name, you'd think he was a sweetheart, but Romeo is my meanest kitty. When we met him, he was a wretched, scrawny stray with dirty matted fur, a runny nose, crusty eyes, and ears black with mites. But he put his arms around my neck and started nuzzling my neck and purring loudly. It was 3 days before Xmas and I cried at the thought of him not having love for the holidays until my fiance let me take him home. 

A bath, a visit to our trusted vet, some good food and lots of love turned him into...well, a cat that lives in our house!  He has shown his true nature in the photo I submitted. The picture I can't show is how he wakes me up every morning around 5 am (it's gotten steadily earlier) by digging at my pillow and my hair and sitting on my head. All the while, he purrs as loud as possible!
