What makes Rhiannon so mean?

Even when Rhiannon is in one of her better moods, this is what she looks like. She now scares the poo out of my 8 month old Lurcher Merlin, leaps out at him at every opportunity & sits by his food bowl guarding it. Merlin just stands there whimpering, the big wuss that he is. He knows that she will shred his nose, if he so much as twitches a muscle. He is allowed to wash her though. His tongue does it in a fraction of the time that she would do it in herself.
