What makes Poppy so mean?

Poppy looks like a nice cute harmless kitty communing with nature. I got him from a rescue center when I lived in England.

He loves to attack and kill helpless defenseless carpets.  In our house in Virginia there was a cat flap. Poppy loved to catch birds, mice, snakes, and bunnies and bring them into the house alive, kinda like stocking up the larder. This way he could catch them and kill them at his leisure!  To give him credit, he always ate what he caught.
