What makes Penelope so mean?

Beware!!! This is Penelope. I found her as a small stinky kitty one day after work in a bad area of L.A. She was happily kicking back with 3 very large dogs and eating large, cheap chunky style big dog food. 

After taking her home in a box, and my girlfriend thoroughly cleaning her, fleas and all, she has moved in. Forget about petting her too long--she refuses to be held for more than a few seconds. The vet says that her color makes her ornery, and she fights with Benny Blanco, our other cat, but we love her anyway.
