What makes Murphy so mean?

This is my sister's cat Murphy. Murphy is like an overstuffed footstool with the tiniest feet imaginable. Murphy is the master of the mood swing. One moment he's quietly lying around, and the next he's up hissing and growling at anyone who dares walk by. My sister, of course, swears Murphy is an absolute love and wouldn't hurt a fly. I have the scratches to prove otherwise.
